Disgruntled CBS Late Show host David Letterman, rumored to be heading to ABC soon, reportedly is already unhappy with the new network and thinking of going elsewhere. ABC is stunned the host, who is unhappy at CBS after years of being unhappy at NBC, is already disenchanted. "We expected him to be unhappy, of course, but we hoped he'd at least wait until he actually joined our network," said one network executive who wished to remain anonymous so as not to offend Letterman.
Sources close to the longtime late night superstar point to a variety of factors for his unhappiness. Letterman has told friends he feels his new deal, which hasn't been signed yet, is unfair and he is getting below market value. He has mumbled to staffers on the show, "I hope someone over there's enjoying the big bucks." He has also been worried about his own ratings on the show, and has already begun blaming ABC's weak primetime line-up for providing poor lead-ins to his show. "Oh, yeah, The Chair, that was a real winner," he cracked to a group of Late Show writers last week. "Maybe they should just put Millionaire in our time slot five nights a week."
The cranky funnyman also has fumed over the unfair treatment he has yet to receive from those he disparagingly refers to as the ABC "suits." He has frequently been heard making derogatory comments about them as a response to what he feels is a disproportionate amount of attention given to Nightline host Ted Koppel, who currently still works for the network. Letterman is also said to be miffed the show hasn't begun promoting him yet, even though his show does not air on the network as of now. "Not like I expect those weasels to care about us," he cracked. He has also begun making a wide variety of Disney-related cracks in reference to the network's corporate parent.
The host has also complained to friends lately about sub-par studio facilities he expects to be given, poor catering services, and the quality of the soap in the ABC corporate washroom. Letterman is reportedly beginning preliminary negotiations with Fox to move there a soon as he actually takes his show to ABC.
