22-year-old pop star Jessica Simpson, a professed virgin who publicly stated her intention to wait until she was married to have sex, has renounced her virginity. She makes the declaration weeks after her marriage to longtime boyfriend and lead singer of 98 Degrees, Nick Lachey. "I am no longer a virgin, and I totally renounce all previous statements about virginity," Simpson read from a prepared statement. "I regret my previous abstention from sex and hope to make up for it in the future."
Simpson had mentioned in numerous interviews in the past she was proud of her virginity, but she apparently had a change of heart. According to the blonde singer, her and Lachey had sex multiple times on her wedding night and it was "great." "I wonder what I was thinking in the past," she added. "I was a fool to be missing out on this."
"I would urge young girls not to miss out like I did," Simpson said. "Because of a misguided belief that it was better to wait, I missed out on some good times and lots of great sex. I regret that stance and apologize if I have deprived any teenage girls who might have followed my beliefs from their own sexual opportunities." Simpson also told her fans about what she called the "dangers" of abstinence. "Many people, whether it be your parents, church leaders, friends, whoever, will tell you about the dangers of premarital sex. But what about the dangers of abstinence? Hey, you're only young once, and if you have a chance to sleep with a guy as cute as Nick Lachey, you'd better take it or you'll regret it when you're older."
Some abstinence groups and conservative "value-based" organizations were disappointed by Simpson's announcement. "Marital sex is a beautiful thing," said Larry Dawon of Concerned Families For Abstinence, "but how does that invalidate her decision to wait?" he added her comments about sex perhaps indicated that waiting did indeed make the act more pleasurable and meaningful.
In her statement, Simpson seemed to anticipate such comments. "Some might comment that waiting until marriage did indeed make the act more pleasurable and meaningful," she stated. "However, I disagree. Sex is sex, and it is great all the time. I urge my fans of all ages and marital statuses to not let it build up inside them, but to let it out as soon and often as possible. Trust me." Simpson closed her statement with a remark that struck many as somewhat flippant. "The ring on my finger isn't what's getting pleasured, if you catch my drift."
