| Summer Movie Reviews 2001 (July & August) |
We're back with another few months' worth of preconceived notions and assumptions, otherwise known as out incredibly early reviews. For those of you new to the concept, we are reviewing the movies before everyone else-before we even see the movies, and in fact, before they even come out. Then as the summer rolls along, we go back and update the scorecard with what we really think after we actually see the films.
If you missed them, check out May & June's Reviews.

July

Scary Movie 2 ** |
Pre-view Review: The first one wasn't nearly funny as it should have been. Based on that, this is about as funny as I would expect it to be, although the gross-out humor still comes off as more desperate than clever.

Cats and Dogs *** |
Pre-view Review: I'm not normally big on animal movies, but this one had me laughing the whole way through. Suprisingly charming and creative.

The Score **.5 |
Pre-view Review: A great cast, Brando, DeNiro, Norton-is fun to watch, but even they can't overcome an overly familiar heist story.

Legally Blonde ** |
Pre-view Review: Although Resse Witherspoon is charming enough, this comedy eventually gets too silly for its own good despite a mildly amusing premise. It doesn't stick in the brain any longer than its running time.

Jurassic Park 3 ** |
Pre-view Review: Sure, it's sort of fun watching dinosaurs chomp people, but even adding William H. Macy is not enough to get away from the whole been there, done that feeling. It's time to let this franchise die.

America's Sweethearts ***.5 |
Pre-view Review: An outstanding cast makes this witty romantic comedy impossible not to at least admire, and many people will love this. Great adult counter programming for the non-dinosaur crowd.

Planet of the Apes *** |
Pre-view Review: Tim Burton has managed to make a movie that, while not surpassing the original, provides a fresh enough take that it makes you think maybe it is OK to spend lots of dollars on remaking beloved oldies.

Rush Hour 2 *.5 |
Pre-view Review: Yeah, we really needed a sequel to THAT movie. Not any better than the first one, except the fish out of water stuff seems even more stale now, even if they did switch roles and make Chris Tucker the fish.

Original Sin **.5 |
Pre-view Review: I will never complain very much about a movie that shows Angelina Jolie having sex, but it would be nice to have an interesting story to go along with that. She and Banderas do indeed heat up the screen, but the plot fizzles much too early.

American Pie 2 *.5 |
Pre-view Review: Well, it's better than Porky's II, but that isn't really saying much, is it? Jason Biggs needs a role in another hit movie-fast!
What did I really think?
Osmosis Jones *** |
Pre-view Review: The oddball mix of animation and gross-out live action segments is a little jumbled, and a lot of the gross-out stuff goes a long way. But Bill Murray is always worth watching, even when he's disgusting, and Chris Rock has one of the most hilarious voices around.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back *** |
Pre-view Review: Kevin Smith is not for everyone, I will admit, and his stuff can be hit or miss, but when he is on he is funny. Hey-"funny"-finally, it's a summer "comedy" that is actually funny. Go into it in the spirit of having a good, dumb old time and you won't be disappointed.
