20 Reasons to be Thankful for MTV

Last week MTV held its 20th Anniversary Special, "Live and Almost Legal," in classic MTV fashion. It presented the special as if it were a wild, anything-can-happen-party, but really it was just yet another excuse for three hours of what the channel does best: plugging and patting itself on the back.

In between the countless interviews that went something like this...

MTV personality: Hey, isn't MTV great?
Celebrity: MTV rules!
MTV personality: What is the name of your newest project?
Celebrity: It's __ and watch for it ___. It's gonna be great!

...there were a few highlight packages that made me reflect on the 20 years of MTV and why we should all be thankful-yes, thankful for MTV. I made a list of reasons-they conveniently came to exactly 20-and now I will share them with you.

House of Style-No, there was nothing groundbreaking or even particularly interesting about this show's look at fashion, but it did give us a chance to see more of Cindy Crawford for a while.

mtv20

MTV gave us a great guilty pleasure in two of the funniest, dorkiest, most hysterical guys ever back in the early 90's-no, not Beavis and Butt-head…Nelson.

mtv20

The channel has always been committed to diversity-after all, it shows us all sorts of people: young and beautiful white people, young and beautiful black people, young and beautiful gay people...

mtv20

Whenever there was a new record to hype, or an artist wanted to let us know about an upcoming tour or project, thanks to MTV News, WE HEARD IT FIRST!

mtv20

Unplugged: This show revealed the true talents of musicians who got back to their roots by stripping away the pretense and just playing with no electricity…except maybe every now and then…and maybe adding an orchestra…and maybe adding some guest stars…and maybe-ah, at least it was music, what more do you want?

mtv20

J.J. Jackson was just plain COOL. And if you don't remember him, well, that's your problem

mtv20

Provided valuable insight into our nation's celebrity culture with its Rock and Jock specials by showing athletes are just as moronic as entertainers.

mtv20

Its reality programs have occupied dozens of our whiny, self-absorbed youngsters an outlet for months at a time and prevented them from actually entering real society.

mtv20

Jackass has resurrected the time-old (but previously fading) tradition of "guy getting nailed in the crotch" humor.

mtv20

Its revolutionary "Choose or Lose" coverage motivated a whole new generation to get out, register to vote, and then not show up on Election Day.

mtv20

In case anyone forgot how utterly fantastic Michael Jackson is, MTV helpfully agreed to his demands to be referred to as "The King of Pop."

mtv20

Helped influence a generation of filmmakers, who in turn helped wean movie audiences from relying on outdated tools like "attention spans" or "patience."

mtv20

How exciting would it be for Madonna's records to be "banned" from Casey's Top 40?

mtv20

Tune in to the channel during the summer, wait 15 seconds or so, and you'll probably see a girl in a bikini (the rest of the year, you might have to wait a full minute or so).

mtv20

Prevented a possible drought of vapid awards shows by seemingly coming up with a new one every year.

mtv20

Who can even calculate how many parents were encouraged and pleased to turn on the MTV, see Jesse Camp, and say, "At least my kid didn't turn out like THAT"?

mtv20

Without MTV, Warrant never would have popular, and if Warrant had never been popular, I never would have made out with that chick to "Heaven " back in '93. (OK, that one's a little personal)

mtv20

Their inexplicable reluctance to play videos by black artists in the early 80's probably saved us from some really lame Kool and the Gang videos.

mtv20

They secured the place of The Buggles in music history.

mtv20

Those couple of videos they played. You know, the other night at 3:00 AM?
